PAGE 1 – Semiotic analysis of a magazine front cover (ridebmxmag. uk – issue 120)

Published by alexanderhofe

This is the front cover of ‘ride uk bmx magazine’. Its focus is on bmx in the uk. Its target age group would be young adults and teenagers.

CENTRAL IMAGE

The main image is the bmxer in the centre; he is at the front of the layout with the text behind him. This means you see him first and it emphasises the trick he’s doing.

COLOUR

There are a lot of greens because the background is of woods, little has been altered to this photo. Also nearly all the text is in a yellow/orange colour which works well with the greens and is easy to read against the background.

MODE OF ADDRESS

The front cover is focused more on the photograph then the text; this may appeal to their target group because the photo will stand out more. The text is very short; all it contains are the headings in the magazine. This is so the buyer isn’t told too much about the magazine, and will purchase it to find out. The layout is very basic there is not too much clouding the image, this is a simplistic style.

BLURBS/PUFFS/SLOGANS

Across the bottom reads ‘Along for the ride’ this links to the magazine title. It is written in a graphic style; it’s clear and stands out. This could include the reader and be anchorage text but it doesn’t use the words ‘you’ or ‘us’.

GRAPHIC FEATURES

Hairs flowing from the sides of the cover have been added they are the same colour as the text as well as being in a similar style as the bolder text at the bottom. This keeps the layout simple and aesthetically pleasing.

ANCHORAGE TEXT

This cover contains little or no anchorage text. There are no words that include the reader such as ‘you’ and ‘us’.
